Proving the work could stand alone as a foundational component of theatrical culture, independent of his own performing presence.

The move into musical theater — alongside collaborators like Tim Rice and Lee Hall — produced significant commercial successes, driven by work for The Lion King and Aida.

These theatrical ventures provided the Oscar and Tony Award wins that finalized his EGOT status. He maintained this theatrical presence for over a decade with Billy Elliot the Musical, which earned four Olivier Awards in London.
